Orange County Volleyball Club was started in the fall of 1972 as the Santa Ana Volleyball club. Soon the name changed to Orange County, and the club slowly expanded. A fundamental approach to the game, the establishment of a strong work ethic and a tremendous continuity in the coaching staff are attributes which have made OCVBC a successful club experience for so many players over the years.
Orange County Volleyball Club has a tradition of emphasis on fundamentals and sportsmanship. More importantly, OCVBC creates friendships which are built through years of working and competing together. Club History in the 2000's
2000:
The 2000 season was another successful year for Orange County Volleyball Club. The 16 Blue team fought their way to the finals before losing to Bakersfield Select in front of 4,000 fans. The 14 Blue team battled through an exciting 4th place finish. The OCVBC 18 NIKE team won the televised final in front of over 10,000 fans. These three finishes allowed OCVBC to win the Club Cup for the 13th time in the 17th history of Volleyball Festival.
2001:
The 2001 season brought another Championship for OCVBC. Jim Downey’s 16 Blue team swept past the Nike Northwest to win the 16s Championship. The 14 Blue team was 4th in a highly controversial finish, while OCVBC NIKE finished 9th. Unfortunately the Club Cup slipped away. OCVBC has won 13 of the 18 Club Cups awarded to the club with the best overall finish at Volleyball Festival.
2002:
Another successful year for OCVBC, which featured OCVBC 14 Blue losing an exciting finals math to Oahu and Coach Gary Nakamura’s 16 Blue team finished 3rd overall. Nike lost a crucial match on Thursday and finished 17th. While OCVBC did not win the Club Cup, the Club has won 13 of the 19 overall championships.
2003:
While the NIKE team finished a strong 11th place in the 18s and the 14 Blue dropped to finish 39th, the 16 Blue coached by Jim Downey lost in the finals of the most exciting finals of Festival History. The much shorter OCVBC 16s battled Saddleback to force a “one game to 25” sudden death final. Before 6,000 spectators, Saddleback won 33-31.
***For the NIKE team, setter Andrea Collins who had led the 2001 OCVBC 16 Blue to the National Championship played her final volleyball matches. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in December, Andrea had fought, worked and recovered to play by May. Before the Festival the cancer reappeared. On September 4th, 2003, Andrea had passed away. She will always be remembered for her loyalty, dedication, her love, and ability to compete. Number 16 will never be worn again by an OCVBC player***
2004:
The 21st, Volleyball Festival moves to Reno, Nevada. The change was Golden for the Orange County Volleyball Club Nike team who won the National Championship in a one game thriller by the score of 25-23 before than 7,000 fans. The televised match featured a much taller Empire team and the Nike team with their well-disciplined ball control. Coach Gary Nakamura’s team championship marked the 27th National Championship in Club History. The memory of Andrea was with each player throughout the week. The OC 16 Blue and 14 Blue lost key matches to drop but finished strongly. The 12 Blue coach by Ashlie Hain finished in the top 12 for the best OCVBC finish by a 12’s team.
2005:
The second Reno Volleyball Festival was a success for Orange County. While the NIKE team lost a key match on day two, they rallied back to capture 7th. The OCVBC 16 Blue team playing with out there coach, Jim Downey, finished an outstanding 6th. Travis Turner, the Director of our boys club Balboa Bay, flew in to coach them and did an outstanding job. The OCVBC 12 Blue team coached by Kari Rush & Whitney Pavlik, finished 8th, which is the highest finish that OC has ever had in the 12s.
2006:
Reno #3 was another eventful year for Orange County Volleyball Club. The Festival weather was HOT, HOT, HOT. With 18 teams OCVBC represented well throughout the week with the highlight being Darryl Gan’s 14 Blue’s team to the final. They lost a very close final to Rancho Valley but showed they would be a team to contend with for years to come. The NIKE team finished 11th in the 18s, while the 16s finished 3rd. The 13’s presented a very respectful 6th place, & the 12s earned a 19th spot.
2007:
Another HOT, but successful Volleyball Festival in Reno for Orange County Volleyball Club. The 12 Blue team led by coach Ric Jennings finished 5th which is the highest finish ever for an OCVBC 12’s team. OCVBC 13 Blue finishes 6th as coaches Marcia Bradbeer & Doris Hawly “peak” their team for the Festival. The 14 Blue team upset a number of higher seeded along the way to a 7th place finish. The 15’s battled and finished in 10th place. Orange County Volleyball Club NIKE wins the National Championship on national television with a three set win over Goledenwest. Seniors Stephanie Gay, CoCo Yokohama, Kasey Kipp and Katie Wells play their best in this final match of their club careers.
2008:
The final Volleyball Festival in Reno proved to be quite successful for Orange County Volleyball Club. The 12s coached by Doris Hawley & Laura Alford had quite a busy week and came away with a great understanding of the game. The 13 Blue & coached by Matt Skolnik experienced a very successful run before losing to Aioli Lianeres from Puerto Rico in the finals of the Championship Bracket in a thrilling match. They finished 3rd overall and proved they would be a team to be reckoned with for years to come. The 14 Blue led by coaches Darryl Gan & Josh Ko, lost to Rainbow of Hawaii and were delegated to the consolation division which they won to finish 17th. The 15s with Darryl Gan & Taryn Robertson coaching made a run at the championship but lost a tough match to Boniquin of Puerto Rico and finished 5th. The 16 Blue put together an awesome tournament to win the clubs 30th National Championship. Jim Downey’s team did not drop a single game during the tournament. OCVBC 18 NIKE coached by Pat Bonner, had a very respectable tournament, to finish 5th overall. Next year Volleyball Festival moves to Phoenix, Arizona.
2009:
The Volleyball Festival moved to Phoenix, which turned out to be a great move. Orange County Volleyball Club 18 Nike (with only 3 seniors) opted to play in the Junior Olympics in Miami and finished a very respectful 13th. At the Festival, Josh Ko’s 12’s and Marcos Sanchez’s 13’s have memorable experiences with players leaving with a much better grasp of the game. Scott Bruce’s 14 Blue team won the Championship with a thrilling 19-17 victory in the last game over an always-competitive Beach Cities team. OCVBC 15 Blue coached by Matt Skolnik battled all the way to the finals and narrowly lost to Saddleback for the championship by a score of 15-13 in the third. Jim Downey’s 16 Blue lost to Kern River to finish 3rd overall. OCVBC enjoyed a very successful 2009 season.

Clearly the focal point to the end of the Orange County Volleyball Club season, the rapidly expanding Volleyball Festival includes more than 500 teams from 43 States. The 14 Blue team defeats San Diego for the title. The 16 Blue team takes 8th, while the 18s wind up 7th. Once again OCVBC takes the Nike cup for the 5th time in 7 years.
1991:
550 teams converge on UC Davis for the Volleyball Festival and the Nike Cup once again comes home with OCVBC. Dale Flickinger marks his return to the club by leading 16 Blue to 2nd. The 18s are 4th and the 14s take 6th.
1992:
The Nike Cup slips away at the 600 team strong Nike Volleyball Festival, although the 18s win their division and the National Championship. The 16 Blue and White teams lose early round matches, relegating them to the lower finishes. The 14s take a respectable 15th.
1993:
The UC Davis Volleyball Festival marks is 10 year anniversary and Orange County Volleyball Club enters is first ever 12 & Under team. The 16 Blue teams wins its division, while the 18s take 3rd. The 14 Blue team takes 9th, but beats South Bay in a Playoffs to earn OCVBC the Nike Cup, signifying the best overall club finish. It is the 7th time in 10 years OCVBC has taken home the best overall finish.
1994:
The club expands to 14 teams (3-18s, 5-16s, 4-14s, & 2-12s) and enjoys one of its best seasons in history. OCVBC retains the Nike Club Cup, at the Nike Volleyball Festival. Over 700 teams fill the arenas and Sacramento based gymnasiums for the week long Festival, which features over 7,000 screaming fans in the Recreation Hall and a world wide television final in the 18s where OCVBC takes 2nd. The OC 16 Blue takes home the Championship, the 16 Red team takes 7th, & 16 White is 9th.
1995:
Orange County Volleyball Club grows to 16 teams strong. Volleyball Festival has more than 8,000 participants. For the first time in the history of Festival, 2 teams from the same club square off in the 18s final. With OCVBC 18 Nike, barely getting the edge of OCVBC 17 Blue in a thrilling final. In another nail biter, 16 Blue nips over Kern River to take home the Championship. OC 14 White winds up 19th, & for the 9th time in 12 years the Nike Club Cup come home to Orange County.
1996:
OCVBC flourishes again with 16 teams who join a field of over 850 club teams at the largest Volleyball Festival ever. The OCVBC 18 Nike team swept every match in two straight including the televised final. The OC 14 Blue team was 3rd, the 16s was 13th to clench the Club Cup once again.
1997:
Orange County Volleyball Club 16 Blue peaking at the rite time, provides the spark in an emotional and highly charged match in front of 6,000 4th of July spectators to bring home the Championship. The NIKE team finishes 5th, & 14 Blue finishes 23rd. The Club Cup is awarded to OCVBC for its efforts in good sportsmanship.
1998:
In the Festivals 15th Year, the NIKE team makes it look easy. In front of 9,000 fans and a national television audience. NIKE swept to the 18s Championship without dropping a single game. The 16 Blue finished a hard fought 3rd, while four OCVBC 16s teams finish in the top 32, in an age group that featured over 300 teams from around the United States. OC 14 Blue finished 5th, but wins a crucial match on the last day to ensure that OCVBC win the Club Cup for the 11th time in its 14 years.

A new decade begins and USVBA starts its own Junior Nationals at Davis. MVP Wendi Rush leads 13s to a championship title. The 15s and 19s finish 3rd; 17s 5th. Orange County Volleyball Club qualifies another team for Open Nationals in Portland, and finishes 9th overall. Former OCVBC players Dale Keough and Paula Weishoff are named to All-American Team, with Keough earning tournament MVP honors.
1981:
At Junior Nationals in Omaha, Orange County Volleyball Club wins 13s, ties for 3rd in 15s, and finishes 4th in 17s.
1982:
Back at UC Davis, Junior Nationals institute a new regional format and OCVBC 15s take first as Wendi Rush is named MVP. The 13s are 3rd and the 17s 4th. The 15s entered in the 17s Division, play in the Junior Nationals at UC Santa Barbara two weeks alter and surprise everyone by finish a close 2nd behind Cal Juniors. Albert Gasparian’s 17s finish a strong 9th at Open Nationals in Hilo, Hawaii. Kim Oden is named to the All-Rookie team. Also at Nationals, representing the University of Hawaii, former club member Kori Pelaski is named MVP, while her sister Kris makes 2nd team All-American honors.
1983:
Wendi Rush is named MVP while leading the 17s to the Junior National Championships at UCLA. The number one teams in the 13s and 15s place high. The 17s are the youngest team to qualify for the Open Nationals in Memphis, and take 9th.
1984:
A defining year in Orange County Volleyball Club history. The club expands to 2-17s, 3-15s, & 3-13s. The 17s are the youngest to qualify for Seattle Open Nationals and finish 9th. The first Volleyball Festival is held in Santa Clara and OCVBC wins Broderick Cup for best overall finish. OC-1 wins 17s, while OC-2 takes 17s Consolation Division. OC-4 wins the 15s Consolation Division. OC-6 is 2nd overall in 13s. OC-7 takes 13s Consolation title.
1985:
More players (91) join the club than ever before in its history. Orange County Volleyball Club-1, the only junior team to do so qualifies for the USVBA Open Nationals in New York. The Volleyball Festival moves to Davis, the OCVBC take the Broderick Cup for the best overall club finish. The OC-7 team takes the 13s Championship, and the OC-1 team takes the 17s crown.
1986:
Now 97 players strong, Orange County Volleyball Club takes the renamed “Club Cup”, for the best overall finish at Volleyball Festival. The seniors take 5th, the sophomores are 3rd, and the 8th graders take a strong 4th.
1987:
Another 25 players join the club bringing it to a whopping 122. It is so large that the first OCVBC tournament is staged with great success. At the UC Davis Festival, the 13s and 15s cap off their outstanding seasons by finishing on top of their respective divisions.
1988:
In what may be the most successful year in club history, all Orange County Volleyball Club teams in the Davis Volleyball Festival. 17 White ends a successful season taking 3rd. At the Junior Olympics in Fort Collins, Colorado, the 8th graders with the 14s Division. Playing up a year 15 White finishes 3rd and 15 Blue takes 13th. 17 Blue with only two seniors, takes 2nd in the 18 Division.
1989:
The Volleyball Festival at UC Davis becomes the biggest women’s athletic event in the world with over 450 teams. OCVBC takes the Nike Cup, making it the 4th time in 6 years the club has the best overall performance. The 14 Blue team takes 2nd to Kamalii VBC of Hawaii, 16 Blue finishes 2nd to Kern River, and the 18s take 2nd to Nevada Juniors. OCVBC 18 Blue wins the Junior Olympic Championship in Toledo, Ohio downing Nevada Juniors for the title.

Wendi Rush is named MVP while leading the 17s to the Junior National Championships at UCLA. The number one teams in the 13s and 15s place high. The 17s are the youngest team to qualify for the Open Nationals in Memphis, and take 9th.
1984:
A defining year in Orange County Volleyball Club history. The club expands to 2-17s, 3-15s, & 3-13s. The 17s are the youngest to qualify for Seattle Open Nationals and finish 9th. The first Volleyball Festival is held in Santa Clara and OCVBC wins Broderick Cup for best overall finish. OC-1 wins 17s, while OC-2 takes 17s Consolation Division. OC-4 wins the 15s Consolation Division. OC-6 is 2nd overall in 13s. OC-7 takes 13s Consolation title.
1985:
More players (91) join the club than ever before in its history. Orange County Volleyball Club-1, the only junior team to do so qualifies for the USVBA Open Nationals in New York. The Volleyball Festival moves to Davis, the OCVBC take the Broderick Cup for the best overall club finish. The OC-7 team takes the 13s Championship, and the OC-1 team takes the 17s crown.
1986:
Now 97 players strong, Orange County Volleyball Club takes the renamed “Club Cup”, for the best overall finish at Volleyball Festival. The seniors take 5th, the sophomores are 3rd, and the 8th graders take a strong 4th.
1987:
Another 25 players join the club bringing it to a whopping 122. It is so large that the first OCVBC tournament is staged with great success. At the UC Davis Festival, the 13s and 15s cap off their outstanding seasons by finishing on top of their respective divisions.
1988:
In what may be the most successful year in club history, all Orange County Volleyball Club teams in the Davis Volleyball Festival. 17 White ends a successful season taking 3rd. At the Junior Olympics in Fort Collins, Colorado, the 8th graders with the 14s Division. Playing up a year 15 White finishes 3rd and 15 Blue takes 13th. 17 Blue with only two seniors, takes 2nd in the 18 Division.
1989:
The Volleyball Festival at UC Davis becomes the biggest women’s athletic event in the world with over 450 teams. OCVBC takes the Nike Cup, making it the 4th time in 6 years the club has the best overall performance. The 14 Blue team takes 2nd to Kamalii VBC of Hawaii, 16 Blue finishes 2nd to Kern River, and the 18s take 2nd to Nevada Juniors. OCVBC 18 Blue wins the Junior Olympic Championship in Toledo, Ohio downing Nevada Juniors for the title.

Chuck Erbe Starts the Santa Ana Volleyball Club, marking the start of youth volleyball in the United States. He soon changed the name to OCVBC.
1973:
Dale Flickinger takes over, expanding the club from one junior team to three teams.
1975:
In June, Orange County Volleyball Club sent a team the Junior Olympics in Detroit and places 2nd in the 14-Under Division. In the fall, the club grows dramatically with the players like Kari Rush, the Pulaski twins (Kris and Kori), Marcie Wurts, & Sue Corea.
1976:
The 14-& Under team captures a Junior Olympic Title in Chicago. Cheryl Johnston is named MVP.
1977:
OCVBC dominates 14s at Junior Olympics placing first and second. Kori Pulaski is named MVP. The 18s finished second. The club qualifies its first team to the Open National Championship in Hilo, Hawaii. Cheryl Johnston to no ones surprise makes the All-Rookie team.
1978:
Flickinger’s 19s club, with MVP Dale Keough leading the way, captures the JO title. The new kid on the block, rookie Charlie Brande, Co-Coaches the 16s with Flick to the JO title. Kris Pulaski is named tournament MVP. The 13s finished second. Flick’s 19s qualify for Open United States Volleyball Association Nationals in El Paso, and Dale Keough is named to the All-American Rookie Team.

Kris Pulaski is named 19s MVP, while Eileen Hess is MVP in the 13s. Two teams qualify for Open Nationals in Dayton, Ohio. Marie Lundie named 3rd team All-American. Later, Flickinger leaves to coach at ASU.
